Today, Nov. 26, was 12 degrees, calm and fantastic. John checking on a marker bouy in front of Nor'Loch Lodge Resort. It's a good time to take advantage of hiking in Algonquin Park before the snow flies.

                Even though Dwight Bay is still frozen, the Oxtongue River is opening up. As soon as the
                river and the Boyne Creek meet, the ice will drop and the lake level will go back to normal.
                Right now it is down about 15 feet.
               Any bets on the meeting date. Gary says April 21st.

October sunset on magnificent Lake of Bays. After a day of exploring Algonquin Park trails and taking in all the reds, yellows, oranges along the winding roads and trails we settled down by the dock for another show of amazing colours.

Here are our happy hikers in Algonquin Park, Centennial Ridges Trail. This trail is at km 37 and features high ridges and scenic lookouts. The trail is 10km in length and rated difficult taking an average of 6 hours hiking. Our guests stayed for the weekend enjoying a prime rib and trout dinner and started again the next day for another hike after breakfast. Hiking groups are becoming more popular as guests wish to re-connect with nature.

Lake of Bays is sparkling again. Last night the moon glistened off the ice and this morning we can sit on the dock and watch the ice moving, shifting, tinkling and disappearing down the lake through the streams and waterfalls to the south.

Summer is finally here! Time to get out the canoe and paddles and drift down the lake after a busy day. Tall Pines and Sparkling Waters Return

Sparkling waters are returning today and the ice is melting and shifting. Streams from the Boyne Creek and Marsh's Falls enter from opposite sides of our North Bay on Lake of Bays and create enough movement to melt the ice and both meet in the centre of the Bay. The large sheet of ice left over then shift and moves becoming smaller and smaller. Spring brings many great changes!

Mornings in Muskoka in a canoe observing the loons and maybe a deer on the shore are memories to take home or capture on film. A couple took the short trip to ragged falls to watch the tumbling waters and ice crystal at this impressive, rocky waterfall hidden in the forest. February Warms your Face

The lake is brilliant with the sun reflecting off the ice and snow crystals. Days are already longer and skiing in the Forest we can feel the warmth of the sun on our faces. Our guests arriving today will be heading to Hidden Valley or Algonquin Park for perfect winter skiing conditions. Some guests are looking forward to dog sledding, a challenging sport that is gaining fans. What fun when these beautiful animals take off and become quiet as they fly along curving paths through woods and along the shores of isolated lakes and meadows.
Next weekend is Family Day weekend and The Algonquin Park Visitors Centre will be open for the weekend. Take the family there and Sunday Lake Trails are nearby and you may see the dogs (Outward Bound) taking off from the entrance.

Ski Downhill & X-Country

Algonquin Park informed us today that Fen Lake and Leaf Lake have groomed and track set trails, Minesing has backcountry trails open but not groomed for the really adventurous skiers. Hidden Valley also is open for skiing and snowboarding this weekend. The lake is starting to freeze over along the shore but is still sparkling in the middle and so we watch the changing scenery. Snow is drifting down ever so lightly each day and welcomes our winter guests.

Wow, its still snowing and we must have 10-15 cm on the ground. The trees branches are heavy and the lake is still sparkling, a beautiful contrast. The deer are already feeling safer and visiting us by the lake again. If your heading our way bring your skis and snowshoes!

Today the sun is shining and we have little bits of white stuff floating around in the air? Luckily we have a chance to slowly welcome the new season. Guests are still enjoying sparkling waters and hiking in the Park. The visitors centre stays open all year round, every weekend and most of the Holidays. The West gate is always open for maps and information for daily visitors so our guests will continue to to use the park for all seasons.

Still Enjoying Fall Temperatures

It's the last day of October and still the sun is shining on the Lake and our guests are enjoying mild temperatures and a few leaves clinging to the trees. We are ready for our Halloween trick or treaters and some of our guests have even decorated for the occasion.
With fewer leaves on the trees we have spotted a pileated woodpecker (very shy) and more hawks and wild turkeys overhead.

May is for Moose

We are enjoying the beautiful spring weather and watching the arrival of our summer wildlife. The loons arrived the same day the ice went out and we spotted an otter playing just offshore. Moose are coming out to enjoy the sunny mornings and wild turkey have been seen in the area.
We are expecting more sun and a little rain but generally warmer than usual weather for this time of year so will get lots of gardening done.

For the past few days we have been noticing more and more signs of spring. The birds are arriving from the first arrival Robin to the increase in Gold and Purple Finches, Red Polls and various ducks landing in any open water, streams and melted lake shore areas. We will be watching for the first Moose sightings in the clearings.

More Snow and Sun

Conditions are perfect today for a winter ski or snowshoe. The snow came down all weekend along with bright sunny periods where you could warm your face to the sun. Tried some ice fishing but the wind took us off the lake and into the more sheltered forest for a quiet snowshoe.

Starting our new blog today to keep in touch with all our guests, family and friends. Welcome all to our snowy world and a view to the north. We have had another fabulous Dwight winter carnival and you can see it was a great day. Activities apart from wood carving were dog sledding, tea making, winter camping, search and rescue, ice fishing derby and more snow and sun. Anyone have any more pictures to share?
